Escaping is a self-rewarding behavior for a dog, and because of this, it's a challenging one to break if your pup has already done it. Therefore, the most important key to train a dog to not bolt is to do everything you can to prevent him from doing it in the first place! Understand that there are a few genetic and environmental factors which may cause a dog to feel the need to bolt or escape, such as a need for socialization, a lack of exercise, boredom or to find a mate (typically among un-neutered males). So, if you feel your dog needs to fill one of the four needs above, filling that need will be the fastest way to solve that behavior! But in this episode, I'm going to talk about a few training exercises I like to teach owners to prevent their dogs from bolting altogether!
